The Yacht Gurus have been involved in sail training for the American Sailing Association since 1996 and are now instructor examiners. Many of their graduates have successfully moved on to owning their own boats and some of them are long term cruisers. They will all attest to the fact that the ASA sail training courses provide a good grounding for all new sailors and the week long live aboard courses are invaluable for anyone who plan to own their own boat. They work with some of the best training facilities in the USA, Bahamas and Caribbean to provide top notch training.

Yacht Guru and their partner schools follow internationally accepted standards of the American Sailing Association. We offer basic, intermediate and advanced sailing and navigation courses during one week live aboard cruises. This format provides the most immersive environment possible and provides a more thorough experience than being on the boat only a few hours a day. Sure, we have textbooks and required reading, but that's to prepare you for "hands on" instruction and practice.

The ASA sailing curriculum is composed of seven levels, from Basic Sailing to Celestial Navigation and Offshore Passagemaking. Our courses combine two to three levels of the ASA program taught in a one week liveaboard format.Classes start Saturday afternoons at 3:00pm (4:00pm at the Virgin Islands base) with orientation, check-out of the boat, liveaboard procedures, provisioning and preparation for sailing. Sunday morning we leave the dock for a week of sailing and learning in the Florida Keys, the Bahamas or the US and British Virgin Islands. The courses end Friday with docking practice, review, testing, and review of tests.

Knots
How to tie the Bowline Knot
Form a small loop leaving enough rope for the desired loop size. Pass the end of the rope through the loop as though making an overhand knot. Continue around the standing end and then back through the small loop.
Or as we teach our Plonkers in sea school: The rabbit comes out the hole, runs around the tree and goes back down the hole.
How to tie the Clove Hitch using Half Hitches
Form a loop in the working end of the rope. Place it over the post. Form a second loop identical to the first. Place it over the post and tighten.
