Technology
SpeedCat Catamarans incorporate several cutting-edge technologies and innovations, which have created one of the most advanced boats on the planet today. The design criteria was to create a lightweight, fuel efficient, comfortable and fast modern Power Boat brand - drawing on several years of experience gained building similar tunnel-hulls in the past.
- Lightweight :
The hulls and decks of all SpeedCats are vacuum-infused under a negative pressure of -1 atmosphere. Using hi-density DIAB Divinycell pvc closed-cell foam core ( www.diabgroup.com ), high-quality ISO polyester (or vinylester) resins, and the Vacuum Infusion Process we have created a hull & deck that is at least 35% lighter weight, and far stiffer, than any comparable boat manufactured by traditional single-skin hand-lay or vac-bagging techniques.
The massive reduction in resin used in this process, together with the compaction of the fibreglass layers & foam core, results in the ultimate high fibre-fraction percentages being achieved - and additionally allows us to remain very competitive whilst using the highest quality resins, cores & laminates. However, perhaps the most important factor resulting from V.I.P is that the technique virtually eliminates any 'voids' or 'cavities' in the structural laminate - preventing any chance of 'Osmosis' in the hull structure.
- Fast & Fuel-efficient:
The secret of any fast boat is to have as little as possible wetted surface area in the hull design. The low-drag asymmetrical hull design of SpeedCat Catamarans does exactly that - providing a clean, vertical-edge tunnel that aerates the water to the bare minimum, and yet still provides an unrestricted flow through it.
A set of state-of-the-art Hydrofoils was designed to create lift, and also add a noticeable extra stability to the boat. There is a central hydrofoil between the two hulls, and two smaller stern Hydrofoils on the inboard side of the tunnel. The carefully optimized Hydrofoils bring the boat onto the plane at a surprisingly low speed of about 12 knots, and the specially designed rear foils ensure that the boat stays almost horizontal as it rises, without any 'hump-effect' on take-off.
Once the boat reaches approx. 30 knots the foils create enough lift to raise the boat onto the lower planing surfaces of the hull, which reduces the wetted surface area by a further 20%. This large reduction of the wetted surface area results in the boat needing 30 - 40% less energy to maintain the desired cruising speed, which translates into a fuel-saving of at least 30% - or alternatively an increased operating range of 30%.
Of course, this same factor also means that the boat has a 30% higher top speed, if required, because it has more energy available to achieve it - and this additional performance makes it much more seaworthy, especially in extreme conditions.
Amanzi Marines' specially designed Hydrofoils are CNC-machined from 316L stainless-steel and, in combination with the s/s rubbing strips on the underside of both keels, allow 'beaching' of our SpeedCats on sandy or soft ground without damage.
- Comfort:
The 'comfort factor' of the SpeedCat Catamaran range is another unique feature, and this is mostly the result of the Hyrofoils which act like a shock-absorber, almost totally eliminate the 'slamming' effect in rough water. Of course, the lift created by the foils ensures that most of the hull is out of the water, providing an unrivalled ride, especially in choppy seas. The average cruising speed in the open ocean is at least 6 - 8 knots higher than any other comparable catamaran, due to the unique hull and tunnel designs, the light weight, and the lift from the multiple hydrofoils.
The dual asymmetrical hulls provide an exceptionally stable platform at both trawling, and high speeds. Due to the lightness of the construction, and the lightweight T-Top structure, the centre of gravity is kept extraordinarily low, and this also alleviates the rolling effect that is commonly experienced with mono-hulls and symmetrical catamarans.
- Modern Design:
The Amanzi Marine design team conceived a sleek-looking modern design that stands out, rather than following the main stream - whilst still incorporating all the traditional advantages of a catamaran.
The clean and functional design eases movement around the open deck areas, ensuring great visibility and safety - whether you are sport fishing, getting away for a weekend in our GT version, or just day-tripping with family or friends.
- Environment:
At Amanzi Marine we strive to be as environmentally aware as possible, and the closed-moulding vacuum-infusion manufacturing process we use reduces styrene emissions into the atmosphere by up to 80%, compared to traditional fiberglass techniques.
Additionally the Vacuum Infusion Process provides a cleaner, safer and healthier working environment for our staff - as well as enhancing the quality and repeatability of our products, allowing us to maintain strict quality control throughout all aspects of the manufacturing process.
